정성은 교수는 2004년 미국 메릴랜드 대학에서 설득커뮤니케이션을 전공으로 박사학위를 받은 후 미국 서일리노이 대학에 5년 동안 재직하였다. 2010년에 성균관대학교에 부임하여 현재 미디어커뮤니케이션학과 정교수로 재직 중에 있다. 한국과학기술한림원 정책학부의 정회원에 2023년 임명되었다. 설득커뮤니케이션의 심리적 과정과 미디어 메시지들의 사회적 영향에 관한 기존 이론을 수정하고 개선하였으며, 설득커뮤니케이션 이론을 바탕으로 위험과 질병에 대한 정보처리 및 예방행위 확산을 위한 과학커뮤니케이션 연구들을 수행하고 있다. 설득과 태도변화의 중요이론인 정보통합이론을 확장한 순차적정보통합의 수학적 모형을 개발하여 검증하고 설득의 기본 요소인 메시지 격차에 관해서도 새로운 모형을 제안하였다. 설득의 주요요소인 논증의 품질, 정보원 전문성과 이슈관여도의 효과에 관한 새로운 가설을 제시하고 검증하였다. 미디어 효과 이론 중 하나인 제3자 효과 이론을 수정하고 확장한 많은 연구들을 주요 국제학술지에 발표하였다. 이러한 설득커뮤니케이션과 미디어 효과에 대한 이론을 보건과 과학 커뮤니케이션에 적용하여 다양한 연구들을 하였다. 위험 가능성 지각의 정확한 측정과 이를 이용하여 백신접종과 마스크 착용 등 예방행위 예측 모형을 개발하고 검증하였다. 운동 등 건강행위의 동기고취 요인을 밝히기 위한 여러 연구들을 주요 국제학술지에 발표하였다. 최근 낙관적 편향과 위험예방행위 간 관계를 규명하는 연구를 출판하였다.   
이러한 연구 결과로 국내외 저명학회로부터 다수의 학술상을 수상하였다. 전미 커뮤니케이션 협회 (NCA) 커뮤니케이션과 사회인지분과로부터 네 번에 걸쳐 올해의 논문상 (Distinguished Article Awards, 2005년, 2010년, 2014년, 2016년), 국제커뮤니케이션학회 커뮤니케이션 (ICA)의 정보시스템 분과로부터 최우수 논문상(Randall Harrison Outstanding Article Award, 2019)과 과학과 생물 분과로부터 커뮤니케이션 과학 우수공헌상(Outstanding Contribution to Communication Science Award, 2018), 한국언론학회에서 올해의 논문상(2014, 2022)을 받았다. 또한 우수학회발표논문상을 국제커뮤니케이션 학회 (ICA, 2023), 전미커뮤니케이션학회(NCA, 2007), 미국매스커뮤니케이션 학회(AEJMC, 2018), 한국언론학회(2015), 그리고 한국방송학회(2014)에서 수상하였다. 성균관대학교로부터 성균 가족상 (교육연구부분 우수상)을 수상하였다 (2014년). 정성은 교수의 연구는 국제 최우수 학회지인 Human Communication Research(2회), Journal of Communication, Communication Monographs (3회), Communication Research, Communication Theory, Media Psychology에 발표되었다. 국내 최고권위 학술지인 <한국언론학보>에 2012년 이래 13개의 논문을 주저자로 발표하였다. ICA, NCA, AEJMC의 정기국제학술대회에서 2001년 이래 총 51개의 연구를 발표하였다. 정성은 교수는 한국언론학회 부회장(2022-2023)을 역임하였으며 한국언론학회의 영문학술지인 Asian Communication Research의 편집위원장을 현재 맡고 있다 (2021 – 현재). 또한 건강 관련 국제 주요 학술지인 Health Communication의 편집위원 그리고 Journal of Communication, Communication Monographs, Communication Research, Communication Theory, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication 등의 국제 우수 저널들의 심사자로 활동하고 있으며 <한국방송학보>를 비롯한 국내 우수 학술지의 편집위원을 역임하였다. 2017년 연구년에 미국의 7개 대학으로부터 초청받아 강연을 하였다 (인디애나대학, 조지아 대학, 펜실베니아 주립 대학, 오클라호마 대학, 미시간 주립 대학, 템플 대학, 메릴랜드 대학). 커뮤니케이션 이론, 설득커뮤니케이션, 미디어 심리학, 설득캠페인, 그리고 양적 방법론을 학부와 대학원 과정에서 가르치고 있다. 시집 <마음속 우주>를 출간하였다.

Sungeun Chung (Ph.D., University of Maryland, 2004) is Professor in the Department of Media and Communication at Sungkyunkwan University. He is Fellow of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (Division of Policy Studies) since 2024. Before joining Sungkyunkwan University, he taught communication for five years at Western Illinois University, IL, USA. His research focuses on improving the major theories of persuasive communication and applying these theories to health and risk-related scientific communication. This includes contributing to the diffusion of preventive behaviors such as vaccination and health-promoting activities like exercise. He developed and tested a mathematical model of sequential information integration, which is an expansion of information integration theory, and proposed a new mathematical model regarding the effect of message discrepancy, which is one of the fundamental variables of persuasion. He proposed new hypotheses on the effects of key elements of persuasion, such as argument quality, source credibility, and issue involvement. He has published 14 articles in major journals that revise and extend the third-person effect theory, one of the media effect theories. He has applied theories of persuasive communication and media effects to health and scientific communication, conducting various studies. These include developing models for predicting preventive behaviors like vaccination and mask-wearing, using accurate measurements of risk perception, and publishing research on the relationship between optimistic bias and preventive behaviors. For these research achievements, he has received numerous academic awards including the Randall Harrison Outstanding Article Award from ICA (2020), Distinguished Article Awards from NCA four times (2005, 2010, 2014, 2016), the Outstanding Contribution to Communication Science Award from ICA (2018), the Best Article Award (2014, 2022) from the Korean Society for Journalism and Communication Studies. He also received Top Paper awards from National Communication Association (2007), Korean Association for Broadcasting & Telecommunication Studies (2014), the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (2018), and International Communication Association (2023). In 2014, he received the University Achievement Award from Sungkyunkwan University. His research has been published in the field’s premier journals, including Human Communication Research, Journal of Communication, Communication Monographs, Communication Research, Communication Theory, and Media Psychology. His research has been presented at conferences in communication, psychology, and political science. He is now vice president of the Korean Society for Journalism and Communication Studies (KSJCS) and Editor-in-Chief of Asian Communication Research, which is the official international journal of KSJCS. He served as an editorial board member of Health Communication and an ad hoc reviewer for major communication journals such as Journal of Communication, Human Communication Research, Communication Monographs, Communication Research, and Communication Theory. He also served on editorial boards for three major Korean communication journals. During his Sabbatical in 2017 at Temple University, he was invited. He presented his research at seven universities in the USA (Indiana Univ., Univ. of Georgia, Penn State Univ., Univ. of Oklahoma, Michigan State Univ., Temple Univ., and Univ. of Maryland). He teaches communication theory, persuasion, media psychology, persuasive campaign design, and research methods.
